Youth Leadership Workshop: The annual Youth Leadership Workshop was held on February 9 at the Surratts Library in Clinton,
Maryland. Over 25 Tots and Teens youth and guests learned the principles of public speaking during the four-hour workshop.
The coordinator, Dr. Frank Joe, along with a team of Tots and Teens parents, taught the youth how to organize a speech, podium
etiquette, techniques for overcoming the fear of public speaking, the effective use of gestures, the importance of the speaking
voice and more. Each youth prepared and presented a speech using the principles learned during the day. The speeches were
absolutely awesome and clearly demonstrated the outstanding quality of our youth. The topics covered included physics, current
events, politics, peer pressure, hopes and dreams, sports, career aspirations and more. Each youth received a certificate
of accomplishment and a participant handbook for future use. Thanks to Dr. Frank Joe, Sharon Morton, Essie Shorter, Ron Gilmer,
Roz Wilcots and others who helped to make the day a success.
Black History Celebration: Over 40 Tots and Teens members attended the Kennedy Center performance, "Sweet Potato
Pie and Such!" in celebration of Black History Month. Aftican American storytellers, Karen Nur El-Amin and Kala Jojo

drums, harp, kalimba and bylophone and told traditional African folktales, poetry, praise songs, personal stories and historical
